The residences take the quiet end of it and give it a front door. ## The island a returning guest will recognise Kandima opened in 2017 and set out to be the Maldives resort for people who do not want to sit still. The operator's own count is 270 studios and villas and ten restaurants and bars, which makes it one of the larger single-island resorts in the country. Over the years it has added things you do not expect on a coral island: an electric go-kart circuit called Fast Track, set along the ocean edge, and PlaySpace, a gaming and entertainment hub. There is a sports arena with tennis, badminton, beach volleyball and football, the esKape Spa, the Aquaholics water-sports centre and Kandiland, a kids' club that families come back for year after year. That is the point of Kandima, and it is the point of the residences too. This is not a hideaway for two. It is an island for households: grandparents on the beach, teenagers on the karting track, small children at the kids' club, parents finally reading a book. People who have holidayed here tend to describe it by what everyone did, rather than by the view. The residences sit at the northern end, on a part of the island that was undeveloped until construction began. Atoll Times reported in June 2024 that the project was going onto this northernmost stretch. The developer describes the apartments as looking out across the Indian Ocean, and the owners' side of the island has its own beachfront pool and bar, so you can be part of the resort when you want it and apart from it when you do not. ## Dhaalu Atoll and the water Dhaalu lies south of Faafu and west of Meemu, a domestic flight rather than a speedboat from Malé, and it has fewer resorts than the atolls around the capital. Kandima's shoreline is a long run of beach and lagoon, and the resort's dive and water-sports teams take guests out to reefs and channels across the atoll. Divers who know the central atolls will find the usual cast of reef life; the resort does not market Dhaalu for one headline species the way Baa or South Ari is marketed, and that is part of its appeal to people who like a quieter boat. For owners, the setting matters in a practical way. A long island with a large resort attached means there is always something open, always a restaurant that is not the one you went to last night, and a medical centre on the island, which the developer lists among the facilities owners can use. For families who come for three or four weeks at a time, that breadth is worth more than a perfect sandbank. ## Getting there The residences' own site gives two routes from Velana International Airport. The first is by seaplane, about forty minutes. The second is a thirty-minute domestic flight from Malé to Dhaalu Airport, followed by a boat of about twenty minutes. The domestic-flight route has a quiet advantage: seaplanes fly only in daylight, while domestic flights are not bound to it in the same way, so a late international arrival is less likely to mean a night in Malé. Check the current schedule before you book. The airport link is not incidental. Pulse's wider group owns Dhaalu International Airport and the domestic airline Manta Air, which is why the Kandima transfer has been smoothed over the years. It also means an owner's journey home depends, to a degree, on the same group that manages the apartment. That is a strength while the group is doing well, and one of the questions worth asking in any conversation with the developer. ## Who the place suits The honest answer is: people who already like Kandima. If your idea of the Maldives is a silent overwater villa with nothing to hear but the lagoon, this is a busy island and it will not change. If you have spent winters here watching your children grow up between the kids' club and the pool, and you have wondered what it would be like to have your own key, the Coral Residences are the most direct answer on the market.
