A year at .HERE without owning it: the returning guest's calendar
No one owns a residence at .HERE, but families can still make it a yearly fixture. How a returning guest might use the islands across the monsoons, and how that year differs from an owner's.

The other pieces in this series say plainly that no residence at .HERE is for sale. So this is not a year as an owner, because there are none. It is a year as the next best thing: a family that books the same house every season and treats two small islands in Baa as a fixed point in its calendar. Set out month by month, it also shows what an owner elsewhere in the atoll would be doing differently.
Choosing your weeks
The Maldives has two seasons that matter. The north-east monsoon, roughly December to April, is the dry season: calm seas, clear skies, the best visibility on the reefs and the highest demand. The south-west monsoon, roughly May to November, brings more rain and wind in bursts, lower rates at most resorts, and, in Baa, the reason many people came here in the first place. Plankton gathers in Hanifaru Bay in those months, and manta rays follow in numbers seen in very few places, with whale sharks through the same water. The dive centres generally point to late July to early October, around the full and new moons, as the peak.
A returning family at .HERE tends to pick one of each: a Christmas or February fortnight on Somewhere for the dry-season light, and a shorter stay in August or September for the mantas. The first is the hard one to secure. There are only seven residences on Somewhere and one party on Nowhere, so a household that wants the same house over the festive weeks should ask early each year, and ask the operator plainly how returning guests are prioritised.
While you are there
Life at .HERE is organised around the house. The Somewhere residences are two-storey homes that sleep eight or eleven adults; Nowhere, taken whole, sleeps up to 24. Each has a Roohu, the islands' name for a butler, and the kitchen at Safar will cook in the residence at any hour. Children usually spend the day between the long pool and the lagoon. When the island feels too quiet, Finolhu is a short boat ride away, with its restaurants, water sports and more people, and guests have use of its facilities. On Nowhere, spa rooms, a gym and a cinema are on the island itself.
Plan the practical things as you would anywhere remote. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so late arrivals usually stay a night near Malé. Medical care beyond first aid means a transfer back towards the capital. Mid-monsoon, a day can turn grey and blustery and a boat excursion can move.
When you are away
This is where a guest's year and an owner's part ways. When a .HERE guest leaves, the house returns to the operator. Nothing stays behind, nothing needs looking after, and there are no bills in the months you are not there. The price of that freedom is that the residence you think of as yours is somebody else's in the meantime, and that next year's rate and availability are the operator's decision.
An owner at a resort that does sell, such as Soneva Fushi elsewhere in Baa, has a different year. The home is theirs to use within the programme's rules, their furniture and photographs can stay, and when they are away it usually goes into the resort's rental programme, earning a share of revenue that may or may not cover the service charges and maintenance that run all year. They carry exposure to a quiet season or a repair, and a capital sum is tied up, but they also hold something they can sell or pass on for the remaining term of the lease.
Family, and the long view
Many families find the guest year the better fit: no capital committed, no decisions about managers or rental splits, and the freedom to try another atoll. Others reach a point where they want a room that is always theirs. If that is you, the honest route is to look at an island in Baa where homes are actually offered, while keeping .HERE as the place you visit. The desk's series on Soneva Villa Ownership, beginning at /soneva-villa-ownership-the-place, sets out how one such programme works.
