A family's week at Crystal Residence
Three en-suites on a school morning, a laundry room that keeps the washing out of sight, a lobby that knows who comes and goes, and a generator for the evening the power drops. How a household runs a week in Apollo's Hulhumalé building.

The earlier pieces on Crystal Residence describe the building and the neighbourhood. This one follows a household through an ordinary week: a family of four in a three-bedroom, one parent working from home some days, grandparents visiting at the weekend. None of it is extraordinary, which is the point. Crystal is a building designed so that the ordinary week runs without friction.
Sunday to Thursday: the mornings
A school morning is a test of bathrooms. In the three-bedroom homes Binga has listed at Crystal, every bedroom is en-suite, so nobody waits for anybody. The air-conditioning is already installed in the bedrooms and living room and the water heating is built in, so the family did not spend their first month buying and fitting either.
Breakfast is at the open kitchen, which in the Crystal plans runs into the living and dining space, so whoever is cooking is part of the conversation rather than behind a wall. In the corner homes the table can go by glass on two sides.
Then the building takes over the logistics. The bike comes out of the motorbike parking, which is standard for residents. If the family runs a car, it has a bay on a monthly lease, arranged separately from the rent. The reception lobby is professionally managed and access to the lifts is controlled, so the children coming home in the afternoon come through a managed entrance rather than an open door.
The working day at home
For the parent at home, the 3+1 plan is the one to look for: the fourth room, which the brief describes as a multi-purpose room for a helper or a study, becomes an office with a door. In a three-bedroom plan the balcony often does the same job for a phone call, and at Crystal the balconies are large enough to hold a chair and a small table without anyone stepping over them.
Laundry, which in many flats sprawls across the living room, has its own zone. Every Crystal unit has a dedicated utility and laundry area, and several of the listings describe it as a large separate room. The machine runs during the day behind a closed door.
The evening the power drops
When the power drops, as it occasionally does, Crystal runs a heavy-duty backup generator for uninterrupted power, so dinner is finished, homework is finished, and the fridge stays cold. It is the least glamorous item on the amenities list, and one of the most useful.
Security is 24/7 on site with full CCTV coverage, and waste is handled through the building's own disposal system.
The weekend
Friday morning is the pool, which the building provides for residents, and the gym, which the developer's brief describes as in the final stages of setup; the concierge confirms its status before any viewing.
On Saturday the grandparents come for lunch and stay the night. One of the fully furnished homes Binga lists includes a sofa-bed in the open-plan living room for exactly this. For a family with parents who need medical care close by, Crystal's position in the vicinity of Tree Top Hospital is a quiet reassurance that does not appear on any floor plan.
The week suits a family with school-age children who want a managed, secure building and do not want to furnish the basics. A household with a helper, in the 3+1 plan. A couple where one partner works from home and wants a balcony big enough to think on. The concierge will tell you which of the current Crystal homes fits which week.
