Kandoofa Ecoplex and the idea of a mangrove building
A Hulhumalé Phase 2 development its developer describes as inspired by the mangrove, with ventilation corridors, vertical gardens and a rooftop garden. What the design promises a tenant, and what the desk has yet to verify.

Kandoofa means mangrove, as the developer's own text explains, and the building is presented as one. The catalogue describes a residential development in Hulhumalé Phase 2 whose architecture takes its cue from the way a mangrove survives: open to the air, full of green, built to endure. For a tenant, that is an unusual starting point for an apartment building, and a promising one.
Air and green
The design ideas the developer describes are ones a tenant in a hot climate can feel. Natural ventilation corridors let the breeze move through the building rather than around it, which matters in the shared spaces as much as the flats. Vertical gardens and "abundant greenery" are meant to soften the building's face. Rainwater harvesting is described as keeping the complex's green spaces watered, and a community rooftop garden gives residents a place to grow something and sit among it.
Light and outlook
The developer says every apartment has a view of either the ocean or the city, with plenty of natural light, and finishes described as ethically sourced. Homes range from compact one-bedroom units to three-bedroom family homes, according to the catalogue.
The shared spaces
The brochure lists a rooftop infinity pool, a fitness centre it calls green-energy, children's eco-play areas and the rooftop garden. Solar panels are described as offsetting the communal energy costs.
Taken together, the list describes a building meant to be lived in outdoors as much as in: the roof as a garden and a pool, the corridors as passages for air. That is a different idea of beauty from the conventional apartment tower, and it is the reason the development is worth watching.
What we have not seen
The catalogue gives no floor count, number of homes, developer name or completion date for Kandoofa Ecoplex, and Binga has not listed or inspected a home there. We report the design as the developer describes it. The desk will describe it first-hand once the concierge team has been inside. If the idea appeals, say so in your brief and the concierge will tell you what can be viewed.
